If we didn't love my brother enough to read anything he chose, these books need never have seen the light of a day in our house. And no, this isn't merely my teenage angst, my mother herself groans from the torture every time she has to read it and, as a published author, complains even more than I do. There is no content, no character, only thin tropes smashed together as a money-making scheme to squeeze those sweet, sweet dollars from young gamers and their tired parents. Then I snap back to reality, only to realize that the truth is far more painful and doesn't even have a lick of underlying message or intent. Just hearing the words from the other room triggers flashbacks of 2nd grade literacy in which we read countless passages of "hello, fellow kids!" drivel written as an attempt to push virtuous morals into our brains. Seriously, were these written by an algorithm, or a stressed 12 year old running on two hours of sleep? I've never listened to anything more inane in my life, and I've been exposed to plenty of lazily-written and simple children's books with no plot to speak of. She never last more than a couple paragraphs before saying goodnight the mental strain is clearly too much on her, the writing too stupid to be read.
